Sorry!

I remember playing Sorry when I was a kid. We would race our four game pieces from Start around the board to Home in this Parchisi type game. Turn over a card from the draw deck and follow the instructions. Move your pieces around the game board, switch places with players, and knock opponents’ pieces off the track and back to their Start position.

Slides are located at various places around the game board. When your piece lands at the beginning of one of the slides that is not your color, you automatically advance to the end of the slide, removing any opponent’s piece on the slide and sending them back to Start.

Game moves are directed by cards from the play-action deck. We always played by turning over a card at your turn. I recently found out that Sorry can be made more of a strategic game (and more appealing to adults) by dealing five cards to each player at the start of the game. You then choose which card you will play each turn. In this version, at the end of each turn, a new card is drawn from the deck to replace the card that was played, so that you are always working from five cards.

My favorite card was the “11″ cards (which give the player the option of trading places with an opponent’s piece on the track). And then sometimes you get lucky and get the “backward 4″ card which lets you move back 4 spaces. If you get this card right after you leave Home, you can get your pawn to the finish very quickly!
